London, April 25, 2018 – International independent film and TV production company, Komixx Entertainment Ltd., and Sony Pictures Television (SPT) today announced a multi-project deal to co-develop and co-produce author-based IP for young-adult audiences.
The collaboration marks SPT’s first foray into the thriving young-adult content category. It will cover the development of Komixx’s extensive portfolio of IP optioned from leading YA authors from across the globe, including the electrifying young adult thriller novel Captured by global Wattpad phenomenon Kelly Anne Blount and Robert Muchamore’s award-winning teen spy series CHERUB.
Short form (20x10) digital series Captured and (10x45) TV series CHERUB will be the first productions developed as part of the deal, alongside (10x1hr) My Life With the Walter Boys, based on the compelling and heart-warming young adult novel from Ali Novak with more than 66 million reads worldwide on Wattpad. The development of further long form content is planned to follow in the coming months.
Andrew Cole-Bulgin, Group CCO and Head of Film and TV at Komixx Entertainment said: “We’re at a turning point in the development of new and thrilling content for young adult audiences. Generation Z want to see drama that represents their point of view and comes from a place they can identify with. As a production company, we’ve come to understand the best places to source IP that speaks directly to them. This deal represents a big step forward for both Komixx and Sony Pictures Television in developing the most compelling young adult IP for TV and film, and we’re very excited for the future of the partnership.”
Wayne Garvie, President, International Production, SPT, added “There is so much rich content in the marketplace written and published by adults and teens themselves. The number of young-adult book titles has more than doubled in the last decade and the popularity of self-publishing sites, like Wattpad, have created a surge in original young-adult content. It’s an excellent time to be adapting these characters and stories for video. We look forward to partnering with the expert team at Komixx on our first venture into this exciting genre.”
Headquartered in London, with offices in Los Angeles and Perth, Australia, Komixx Entertainment brings imaginative character-driven stories and adaptations to the screen. The company has a proven track record of success identifying and developing IP across the children and young adult markets. Additional YA productions in development include the adaptation of international Wattpad sensation The Kissing Booth for Netflix, YA thriller series ITCH by writer and broadcaster Simon Mayo and the MONSTER REPUBLIC trilogy from Ben Horton at Hothouse Fiction.
