Trivia-Driven Game Show “Breakaway” Set To Debut On Zhejiang TV
Uplifting and Inspiring “Dancing Nation” Returns for A Second Season On CCTV
HONG KONG (October 17, 2013) – Sony Pictures Television’s (SPT) joint-venture production company Huaso Film/TV Digital Production is ramping up non-scripted production in China with the announcement of a new co-production deal with leading satellite broadcaster Zhejiang Television for the popular game show format “Breakaway,” as well as the return of hit competition format “Dancing Nation” to CCTV.
Based on the hit UK format by SPT’s Gogglebox Entertainment, “Breakaway” features six contestants from different backgrounds competing as a team to complete a giant lit-up racetrack by answering a variety of entertaining and moderately challenging trivia questions related to Chinese culture, history and traditional customs. The show is a test of both knowledge and strategy as each player has the option to break away from the group, answering the questions on their own on a competing racetrack. Those who go it alone have the opportunity to accumulate all of the points, but they also risk leaving the game empty handed if they answer incorrectly. The ten-episode series, which emphasizes the power of teamwork as well the excitement of a fun challenge, starts production on October 19. “Breakaway” premieres on October 26 at 9 p.m. on Zhejiang Satellite TV.
In its first season, “Dancing Nation” entertained and inspired audiences through a unique and uplifting dance competition that illustrated how hundreds of people can come together to dance for a worthy cause. This season, the series will introduce audiences to community heroes, ordinary men and women with extraordinary stories of heroism, selflessness and perseverance, who will be tasked with building and leading their community teams to perform challenging dance routines. Each hero is responsible for recruiting more than a thousand dancers from across the community, including schools, factories and people off the street, to take part in the competition. If the hero can bring their town to its feet -- and if the community can unite behind its hero -- they have the chance to win the competition and raise 250,000 Yuan for local charities and organizations of the hero’s choosing.
The second season of “Dancing Nation,” which has begun production on location with in-studio recording set for early November, is slated to premiere in December and will include eight one-hour episodes set to air on CCTV 12.
“SPT is known for its impressive library of unique and fun formats. Audiences across China are sure to enjoy our fantastic game show format ‘Breakaway,’” said Mary Chan, vice president, production, Asia, SPT. “We are also excited to be working closely with CCTV and local communities across the region to bring back ‘Dancing Nation,’ a high-quality format that underscores the importance of community and everyday heroes who are making an important difference in the lives of their family, friends and neighbors.”
