International Distribution, Asia-Pacific
Robert Lanier is senior vice president of international distribution, Asia-Pacific for Sony Pictures Television (SPT). Based in Sydney, Lanier is responsible for managing and growing SPT's distribution activity across these territories, leading all film, television and formats licensing negotiations for SPT across broadcast and digital platforms, including the expanding SVOD market. In this role, he also works closely with Sony Pictures Home Entertainment across transactional VOD and electronic sell through.
Previously, Lanier was senior vice president, new media and Pay TV, international distribution for SPT. Based in the company's global headquarters in Culver City, he worked closely with SPT's distribution offices around the world to structure and negotiate all licensing deals. He was also in charge of developing new opportunities for the business in the growing digital and SVOD space, including established media markets like Canada and Japan, and emerging markets like China. Lanier joined SPT in 2007 as executive director of international distribution, new media and pay TV.
Prior to this role, from 2005 to 2007, Lanier was a business development executive for Sony Connect, Sony's online media store now known as the PlayStation Network, where he was responsible for developing strategic partnerships with clients like Best Buy. He first joined Sony in 2001, working in corporate development at Sony Pictures Entertainment. In this role, he handled strategic planning for the studio's first digital content offerings, including an online subscription service, as well as key mergers and acquisitions.
Lanier began his career at Stern Stewart & Co., an independent management consulting firm, first in the firm's New York office and later in Tokyo.
A native of Virginia, Lanier holds a BS degree in Commerce from the University of Virginia.
